Privacy Policy

The short version

ZeroTabs stores your notes, tasks, tab sessions, and settings locally on your device. We do not serve ads or sell data. Anonymous usage analytics can be turned off in Settings. The only account connection is an optional KnowMan link for reading queue sync.

What data stays on your device

The following data is stored in your browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local) and never leaves your device:

• Notes — text content you create
• Tasks — your to-do items and completion state
• Tab sessions — saved groups of tabs from the sweep feature
• Daily focus — your focus text and 7-day streak
• Focus timer — Pomodoro session state
• Settings — theme, accent color, background preference, feature toggles
• Photo index — which background photo to show today

Chrome permissions

ZeroTabs requests the following Chrome permissions:

• storage — save your settings and data locally
• bookmarks — read your Chrome bookmarks to display them in the bookmarks panel. We do not modify or copy your bookmarks externally.
• tabs — read your open tabs when you use the "Sweep current tabs" feature to save a tab session. We do not monitor your browsing.

External services

ZeroTabs connects to the following external services:

• Unsplash (images.unsplash.com) — loads background photos. No user data is sent.
• Google Favicons (google.com/s2/favicons) — loads website icons for bookmarks and tabs. Only the domain name is sent (not the full URL).
• wttr.in (wttr.in) — fetches weather data based on your IP address. Your IP is used by wttr.in to determine your approximate location. No account or API key is required. See wttr.in for their privacy practices.
• Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) — used as a fallback weather provider if wttr.in is unavailable. Only your approximate location (latitude/longitude from browser geolocation) is sent. No personal data, no API key, no account.

Weather and location

The weather widget uses wttr.in, which determines your approximate location from your IP address — no browser geolocation permission is needed. If wttr.in is unavailable, ZeroTabs falls back to Open-Meteo, which may request your browser's geolocation permission. We do not store, log, or transmit your location to any other service. Weather data is cached locally for 1 hour.

You can disable weather in Settings at any time.

KnowMan account (optional)

You may optionally connect a KnowMan account to sync your reading queue — either with one click via a KnowMan sign-in page, or by pasting an API key from your KnowMan account settings.

• Your API key is stored locally in your browser's extension storage
• When connected, ZeroTabs fetches your reading queue from api.knowman.io using your API key
• Articles you add to the reading queue from ZeroTabs, and items you archive, are saved to your KnowMan account — that is the purpose of the sync. Nothing else (notes, tasks, sessions, bookmarks) is ever sent to KnowMan.
• You can disconnect at any time in Settings, which deletes the stored API key

Analytics

ZeroTabs uses PostHog for anonymous product analytics to understand which features are used and improve the extension. Analytics events include actions like opening the new tab page, creating notes, saving tab sessions, and changing themes. No personally identifiable information (name, email, browsing history) is collected. We do not use cookies. We do not fingerprint your browser.

You can turn analytics off at any time in Settings ("Share anonymous usage stats") — when disabled, no events are sent at all. PostHog data is processed in the United States under their privacy policy.

Data portability

All your data is stored in standard browser storage formats. You can export your data at any time through Chrome's developer tools, and it will be deleted if you uninstall the extension.

Children's privacy

ZeroTabs does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The extension contains no account creation, social features, or data collection.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as we add features. Significant changes will be noted in the extension's changelog. The "last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
